Poker is a game of skill and techinque. You might think luck plays a part, but you would be wrong. 1. Don’t play every hand
When you’re just starting out, you’ll want to play as much poker as you can. What you must remember is fold when you need to. It’s not worth continuing to play when you know that you are not going to win!
2. Don’t play drunk!
If you want to win a game of poker, do not enter into a game when you’ve had too much to drink. Your ‘tells’ will become obvious as you are less inhibited, you will become reckless and therefore lose even more money. If you are playing low stakes with your mates in your lounge, then enjoy yourself, but if you’re in a casino, stay sharp, alcohol will dampen your ability to watch other players.
3. Don’t stay in a hand because you’re already in.
Yes you may have put some money in the pot already, but if you’ve not got a great hand, throwing more money at a bad hand will not help. You must know when to back down.
4. Don’t play poker if you’re annoyed, angry, depressed or any related emotions!
You should not start playing poker emotionally, you will not react and play with your normal skill, your ‘tells’ will become obvious and your fellow players will take advantage. How do think you will feel after you’ve lost the game and a whole load of money, if you start off in a bad mood?
5. Watch your fellow players
This may seem obvious, but always watch other players, even if you’re not in the hand. Noticed any repeated movements or any indicators of tension, or conversely anyone obviously calm, does one player always fold on every re-raise, or does another always raise in at a certain point in the hand. You might just be able to work out some tells.
