A travel guide to Prague

The city of Prague is a visual treat and there are few capitals anywhere in the world that offer visitors so many sights to see. Given the popularity of the city with tourists, Prague is fortunately home to a number of luxurious and comfortable hotels. Consequently you are sure to be able to find a Prague hotel that ticks all of the boxes as far as your travel needs are concerned.

There are a wide range of hotels to choose from in Prague, many of which are centrally located and ideal for a sightseeing holiday. Organising accommodation is often the first task for tourists to complete after choosing their destination and visitors to Prague have hundreds of hotels to browse through online.

There are hotels in Prague to suit every budget and every requirement that any visitor will have. For those people looking for great deals and relatively cheap accommodation the 2 and 3-star star hotels are the accommodation to look at first.

Hotels such as the centrally-located 3-star Hotel Tivoli offers guests comfortable accommodation and an ideal location from which to explore the city. The similarly great value Hotel St George situated in the New Town area is not only an historic building itself, but is fully equipped and the rooms are a great place to relax after a long day on your feet.

There are also more upmarket Prague hotels for tourists that are looking for the ultimate luxurious experience. The 5-star Hotel Ventana located in the Old Town district provides guests with privacy and luxury in a central location. The deluxe hotel could not be better situated for tourists on Prague's prestigious Celetna Street.

From these centrally-located hotels, many of Prague's attractions are just a short walk away. Old Town Square is the place that many tourists start their sightseeing tour and it is hard to argue with the beauty of this historic area. The nearby Prague Castle is at the top of many people's list of things to see when in the Czech city and the castle's magnificent architecture is truly awesome.

Another Prague attraction that is popular with tourists is the Astronomical Clock. The 15th century clock has been ticking since 1490 and is now one of the most photographed monuments in the city. Each hour the clock chimes and moving puppets emerge from the clock to entertain visitors. There are also some zodiac codes on the clock face to be deciphered that give tourists a taste of the medieval culture of Prague.

Alongside the architectural beauty of Prague is also the serene and beautiful Vltava River that runs through the city. There are many bridges that span the Vltava River, but the Charles Bridge is one of the most spectacular. The Gothic bridge is flanked by giant stone statues that represent religious figures and icons.

During the day the bridge is busy with activity and is a great place to come across some traditional Czech music. Many artists and musicians base themselves on the bridge during the day and this is where Czech culture is at its finest. At night the bridge is a superb location for a romantic walk across the river and there is no better place to look over at the glistening water.

If you are a thrill-seeking tourist then another of the Vltava River's bridges will provide you with an unforgettable experience. Throughout the summer months visitors to Prague can perform a bungee jump off the Zvikovske Podhradi high over the Vltava valley. This form of entertainment is definitely not for the faint-hearted, and the experience is likely to leave you completely speechless.

There are many more gentle ways to have a good time in Prague. The Czech capital is famed for its lively nightlife and there are many clubs that are a great place for you to let your hair down. Tretter’s Bar Cocktails and Zanzibar are two cocktail bars where you can drink long into the night. The trendy Zelezne Dvere is a slightly livelier place, where the DJ lounge is usually packed full of happy dancers.

Many people may prefer an evening in an atmospheric pub than a bar, and there are plenty of these in Prague to choose from. Locally produced beer is regarded as a national treasure and many Czechs will tell you that the nation's beer is the best in the world.

One of the most highly-regarded Prague pubs is the U Medvikdu. This establishment has been around for five centuries and is a mecca for Budvar drinkers. The Black Ox is another option, an authentic Czech pub ideally located above the castle and one of the locals' favourites.

As well as being able to drink in style in Prague, tourists can also enjoy fine dining in one of the city's top restaurants. While traditional Czech food can still be found in many restaurants, in recent years menus in Prague have become somewhat more sophisticated and world-class food is now widely available.

Allegro is the first Prague restaurant to win a Michelin star, and one of their top dishes is the pan-fried foie gras and truffles. If seafood is more of your thing then the Alcron is a good restaurant to head to, where Roman Paulus serves up many fish delights.

On a trip to Prague you will certainly be fed well and can find a restaurant that serves some of your favourite dishes or push the boat out and try something new and intriguing. Dishes such as head cheese may not sound overly appetising but this unique dish is actually really tasty.

From comfortable hotels to dozens of sights to see and many pubs and restaurants to eat and drink in, it is no wonder that Prague is a tourist hotspot. A weekend in the Czech capital is likely to fly by, so remember to take your camera to have plenty of photos by which to remember your holiday by.
